Terra firma
terra firma
- 1605, from Mod.L. terra firma "part of the Italian mainland ruled by Venice," lit. "firm land," from L. terra "earth, land" (probably related to torrere "dry up, parch," hence "dry land," as opposed to sea) + firma "firm," fem. of firmus (see firm (adj.)). Meaning "the land" (as distinct from "the sea") is first attested 1693.
